The Whittenburg Family
The Whittenburg Family arrived in Hutchinson County in 1898. The founder of this family was James Andrew Whittenburg usually known as J. A. His wife was named Tennessee, originally Parham. Their children were George and Mattie. The Whittenburg family was instrumental in getting the county set up in 1901. Later in 1924, the first oil well was drilled on his property.
In 1926, part of his ranch became part of the future Borger and was called Whittenburg after him. Later it became the town of Phillips and was the home of the refinery.
