Josiah Gregg's Expedition by Wes Phillips

In March of 1840, Josiah Gregg and his party crossed the South Canadian river and entered Hutchinson County, passing through the Borger Area and camping on Spring Creek. They hunted Buffalo in our area.

Gregg was the pioneer of this route to Santa Fe. Although others had traveled this route earlier, Gregg was the first to propose it as a major route for commerce from the east. Gregg's expedition included 47 men and two cannons, and they had no trouble with the Indians.
