1958 Map of Borger, description
The City of Borger
A cold day in March marked the birth of Borger. In March 1926, twin oilwells blew in, thus starting the oil boom of Borger making a veritable “Barbary Coast” city in the middle of a vast prairie. Tents, shacks, cots and trailers lined the street, which is now known as the “longest main street” in the State of Texas. Borger has grown and developed into the vast gas reservoir in the panhandle, known to be the largest in the world.
The city is the hub of industrial plants and petroleum production. Borger has outgrown the name “Boom Town” and developed into a stable, economically sound industrial city, from which flows abundance of petroleum, natural gas, carbon black, printer’s ink, synthetic rubber, and many refined petroleum products. Estimated population is 24, 700. Combining Phillips and Bunavista population is approximately 34, 200.
A new country club has been completed, also a new Junior College Building. The first Kaiser Aluminum Dome to be used in the United States was erected as a county coliseum in 1957. The Hutchinson County Library was lately remodeled and enlarged. The hospital was enlarged and medical facilities are second to none. Schools are being built to enable a child a better education. Churches represent most faiths and denominations. With these blessings Borger has made a Mother & Father proud to raise their children here.
